It was formed in 1840 from Campbell county. The county seats are Covington and Independence.

In 2010 the county population was 159,720 in a land area of 160.25 square miles, an average of 996.7 people per square mile.

The equine population was 1,200 in the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey.

Kenton county was named to honor Simon Kenton.
