Gamaliel is in Monroe county about five miles southwest of Tompkinsville. Settlement in the area began about 1800 and the Gamaliel School, for which the town was named, was established in 1840. Gamaliel was incorporated in 1956. The Gamaliel post office opened in 1870. The population in 2010 was 376.
