Hot Spot, Kentucky
Hot Spot is a west Letcher county community on KY 160 and Smoot Creek named for the Hot Spot Coal Company that began operating in the area around 1932. The area was originally known as Mouth of Smoot Creek and a Smoot Creek post office operated from 1890 to 1914. Coal camps in the area, and the associated post offices were called Dalna, for Dalna Hayes, from 1918 to 1923. From 1923 to about 1932 they were known as Elsiecoal. In 1942 the post office was renamed Premium. The origins of most of the names are not known.
