Kings Mountain is a Lincoln county community about ten miles south of Stanford. An early settlement was known as Kingsville, named for a local family. The Kings Mountain railroad tunnel, 3,992 feet long, was completed by the Cincinnati Southern Railway in 1876 after three years of excavation. The tunnel was bypassed by a deep cut circa 1963.
