Vail is in eastern Breathitt county. It was the eastern terminus of the Dawkins Subdivision of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, which reached it in 1951. The line was abandoned in 2004 and most of the line is now the Dawkins Line Rail Trail. The Vail post office operated from 1950 to 1974.
