Bullitt county is in the Western Knobs region of Kentucky. The elevation in the county ranges from 385 to 998 feet above sea level.

It was formed in 1797 from Jefferson and Nelson counties. Bullitt county was a source of Spencer (1824) county. The county seat is Shepherdsville.

In 2020 the county population was 82,217 in a land area of 297.02 square miles, an average of 276.8 people per square mile.

The equine population was 1,500 in the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey.

Bullitt county is in the Louisville/Jefferson County metro statistical area and the KIPDA Area Development District.

Bullitt county was named to honor Alexander Scott Bullitt, an early settler.

Part of Fort Knox is in the county.
