It was formed in 1842 from Livingston county. The county seat is Marion.

In 2020 the county population was 8,990 in a land area of 359.95 square miles, an average of 25.0 people per square mile.

The equine population was 900 in the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey.

Crittenden county is in the Pennyrile Area Development District.

Crittenden county was named to honor John J. Crittenden, U.S. attorney general, senator, and governor of Kentucky.
