Breeding is an Adair county community about 13 miles southwest of Columbia near Harrods Fork. It was named for a local family who arrived circa 1802. There may have been an earlier settlement called Elroy on the land of John Strode. There were several businesses in Breeding and the population probably approached 100.

The post office opened in 1830 as Breeding's, closed in 1892, and opened as Breeding in 1894.

The highest point in Adair county is just north of Breeding.
