Brownsville, the seat of Edmonson county, is located on the Green River near the western edge of Mammoth Cave National Park. It was probably named for General Jacob Brown.

Brownsville was incorporated in 1828.

The Brownsville post office opened in 1826.

The population in 2020 was 925.

Green River Lock and Dam 6 was located at Brownsville. Completed in 1906, it failed in 2016 and was demolished in 2017. Dam 6 was the dam farthest from the mouth of the Green River. The downstream Lock and Dam 5 was at Glenmore.

About three miles upstream from Dam 6 the Houchin Ferry crossed the Green River at the Ollie-Houchin Ferry Road. The ferry was taken out of service in 2013 and after the failure and removal of the dam the ferry crossing was no longer practical.
