Garrett, Kentucky
Garrett is a Floyd county community about 15 miles south of Prestonsburg. There was settlement in the early nineteenth century, but coal mining arrived in the early twentieth century and the Elk Horn Coal Company built a large number of houses for their miners circa 1914. The town declined in the late 1930s. The name Garrett comes from the name of two of the owners of the company.
The Ballard post office opened in 1910 and was renamed Garrett in 1914.
