Hippo is a Floyd county community about 13 miles southwest of Prestonsburg on Shepherd Branch of Brush Creek. The Hippo post office opened in 1902, named for the husband of the first postmaster, who was said to be a hypochondriac. (The first location was about two miles to the southeast.) The post office closed in 1919, reopened in its final location in 1926, and closed in 1996.
