Jeffersontown is an eastern Jefferson county city and suburb of Louisville. The area was settled beginning around 1780. The town of Jefferson was established by Abraham Bruner in 1797, but was variously known as Bruner's Town, Brunerstown, and Jefferson Town.

Jefferson was chartered in 1797.

The Jeffersontown post office opened in 1816 and closed in 1966.

The population in 2020 was 28,904.
