Onton is a Webster county community about nine miles northeast of Dixon. It was originally known as Orton, named for a local family, but the named was already in use for another Kentucky post office, so it was changed to Onton. The Onton post office opened in 1882 and closed in 1974. The population of the Onton census designated place in 2010 was 141.
