Proctor is a Lee county community below the forks of the Kentucky River across the river from Beattyville. The site was settled in the early nineteenth century and named for the Reverend Joseph Proctor. It was the county seat from its formation in 1870 until 1872, when it was moved to Beattyville. The Proctor post office operated from 1843 until 1918.
