Bulan is a Perry county community near the mouth of Jakes Branch on the Trace Fork of Lotts Creek about four miles northeast of Hazard. Bulan was established as as a coal camp and the origin of the name is not known. It was also a station on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad known as Duane Station. Bulan was sometimes called Pistol City for its reputation for violence.
The Bulan post office opened in 1919. The orignal location was a little north and served the Downing Station.
