Howards Mill, Kentucky
Howards Mill was a Montgomery county community on Slate Creek about six miles east of Mount Sterling. A mill was established at the site by James Howard in 1845 and a village grew around it. Eventually there were several mills, a hotel, a distillery, stores, and other commercial activity. The town is mostly gone and the mill site later became the site of the Mount Sterling water works.
The Howard's Mills post office opened in 1851, was renamed Howard Mills in 1897, and closed in 1903.
Southeast of Howard's Mill was the site of Morgan's Station, established circa 1789, before the formation of Montgomery county. (It was then part of Clark county.) The station included several log houses and a stockade. It was attacked and burned in 1793 and was abandoned for several years. The Ralph Morgan house, a Federal style two-story stone building, was built on the site in 1796.
