Meta, Kentucky

Meta is a Pike county community on Johns Creek near the mouth of Bent Branch about six miles northeast of Pikeville. It was named for Meta Smith, who was visiting when the name was selected for the post office. The Meta post office opened in 1896 and closed in 1959. A Breckenridge or Breckinridge post office may have operated at the same location or nearby from 1857 until late in the nineteenth century. A Bentbranch post office operated somewhere in the vicinity from 1866 to 1905.
