Pine Knot is a McCreary county town on US 27 and KY 92 about three miles south of Whitley City. The name Pine Knot came from a local inn. The site was also known as High Point. Pine Knot was incorporated in 1912, was later dissolved, and now is an unincorporated urban place under Kentucky law. The Pine Knot post office opened in 1874 and closed in 1878, was known as Commercial Summit from 1879 to 1887, then reverted to Pine Knot. The population of the Pine Knot census designated place in 2010 was 1,621.
