Princess, Kentucky
Princess, Kentucky

Princess is a Boyd county community about seven miles west of Catlettsburg on Williams Creek. The Buena Vista Furnace was built here in 1847, named for the Mexican-American War battle that year, and operated until 1876. It was about 35 feet tall, built of sandstone, and was charcoal fueled. The Buena Vista was dismantled and moved about a mile away and rebuilt as the Princess Furnace, with an improved design that was fueled with coal. It only operated for about a year and was dismantled and moved to Virginia in 1883. The Princess furnace was probably named for the Princess Mine, which produced the coal it used. The Princess post office opened in 1887 and closed in 1924.
