Sampson is a Harlan county community on Martins Fork of the Cumberland River about 16 miles south of Harlan. The source of the name is obscure. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad arrived about 1930 with the Hagan Tunnel to the Virginia side of Cumberland Mountain. The Sampson post office opened in 1928 and closed in 1950.
