Scranton, Kentucky
Scranton, Kentucky

Scranton was a Menifee county town on Beaver Creek about seven miles northeast of Frenchburg. The first major settlement in the area began in 1819 with the construction of the Beaver Valley Iron Works on Beaver Creek at the mouth of Meyers Fork. The furnace was 35 feet tall and built of sandstone blocks, much like the other furnaces in the region. It operated until 1873. The site of the furnace may now be inundated by Cave Run Lake. In the 1880s a sawmill was constructed at the mouth of Slab Camp Branch and operated there until circa 1911 when the timber was depleted. A narrow gauge railroad ran from Frenchburg to Scranton and Yale until 1911. The name Scranton is from Scranton, Pennsylvania, the home of the people who operated the sawmill. A Mifflin post office opened in 1899, but was renamed Scranton the same year. The source of the name Mifflin isn't known.
